Exhibition «Nicholas Roerich and Mongolia» was opened in Ulan-Bator

The exhibition «Nicholas Roerich and Mongolia» is a joint project of the Worldwide Association of Mongoloists, National Museum of Fine Arts named after G. Zanabazar, and the International Centre of the Roerichs (Russia, Moscow). The exhibition is timed to the 100 anniversary of the Mongolian National Liberation Revolution, to 10th International Congress of experts on Mongolia and to 85th anniversary of the Roerichs Central-Asian Expedition to Mongolia.

The project got complete support from President of Mongolia Ts. Elbegdorj and Minister of Education, Culture and Science Yo. Otgonbayar. The exposition was opened within the bounds of 10th anniversary Congress of experts on Mongolia, which is very symbolic for the elder son of the artist George Roerich initiated the foundation of the first Congress. George Roerich was an outstanding expert on Mongolia, expert on Tibet and Sanskrit scholar and visited the country for many times - in 1926-1927, 1958 and 1959.

The artistic heritage of the Roerichs serves as spiritual bridge that unites cultures of Russia and Mongolia for many years. It is dear and important both to Russian and Mongolian community. The first exhibition of original paintings by N. Roerich in Ulan Bator, in the year of 90th anniversary of Mongolia-Russia diplomatic relations, is of great importance for strengthening of friendly relations between people of two countries.

The opening of the exhibition took place on August 9 in the day when the International Congress of Mongolists started its work. Mr Shagdaryn Bira, General Secretary of the International Association of Mongolists, Mr Yo. Otgonbayar, Minister of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia, V.V. Samoilenko, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia in Mongolia, and V.V. Frolov, Deputy Director General of the Museum by name of Nicholas Roerich in Moscow, addressed to participants of the event with greeting speeches. Mr V. Frolov also presented to the guests of the exhibition some editions of the International Centre of the Roerichs and passed two volumes of the catalogue on the Roerichs art from the ICR to the library of the Museum.

About 300 experts on Mongolia from Mongolia, Russia, China, India, the USA, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, South Korea, Great Britain, Germany, France, Japan, Czech Republic, Poland and other countries visited the exhibition. National Museum of Fine Arts named after G. Zanabazar and the Worldwide Association of Mongoloists prepared a catalogue of the exhibition in Russian and Mongolian languages.

59 paintings by N. Roerich are exposed at the exhibition. They were created in the period of 1925-1947. Among them there is a portrait of the artist by his son Svetoslav Roerich (1930-s). The most symbolic item at the exhibition is the painting "The Great Rider" from the Foundation of the National Museum of Fine Arts named after G. Zanabazar. The audience also has a chance to get acquainted with some documents about life and activities of all members of the Roerich family. Photo- and video materials are exposing a major contribution of this outstanding family to Russian and world culture.
