THE UN WILL HOST THE EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF SIGNING OF THE ROERICH PACT

This exhibition pays tribute to the groundbreaking Roerich Pact and bears witness to our determination to take its spirit forward. I appeal to governments and people everywhere to come together to safeguard our common heritage and humanity,” Ban Ki-Moon says in his official letter.

On April 15, 2015 at the UN Headquarters in New York the exhibition organized by the International Centre of the Roerichs dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the signing of the treaty “On the Protection of Artistic and Scientific Institutions and Historic Monuments” known in history as “The Roerich Pact” will be inaugurated.

UN Secretary-General in his official letter stressed a high importance and relevance of the upcoming event. “This exhibition pays tribute to the groundbreaking Roerich Pact and bears witness to our determination to take its spirit forward. I wish to thank the International Centre of the Roerichs for organizing this inspiring display. I appeal to governments and people everywhere to come together to safeguard our common heritage and humanity,” says the letter.

The upcoming exhibition shows the main idea which Nicholas Roerich, a Russian artist, writer, philosopher and peacemaker has used as the background of the Pact – “Peace through Culture”. The exhibition includes extensive material about the history of creation of the Pact and “the Banner of Peace”: unique photographs, the most valuable archival documents from the collection of the International Center of the Roerichs, copies of paintings by Nicholas Roerich, the originals of which are stored in various museums around the world.

The collected documentary material will allow visitors to understand the depth of the idea, with which Nicholas Roerich 80 years ago has managed to unite the world community and to create an international movement for the sake of preserving culture for the future generations, as well as the relevance of the idea nowadays.

A part of the exhibition including valuable historical and culturological materials is dedicated to the activity of the United Nations organization in preserving the peace on Earth.

The exhibition is organized by the International Center of the Roerichs together with the International Roerichs’ Heritage Preservation Committee with the assistance of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the United Nations. It will be supported by Protobase Laboratories (innovative consulting solutions to optimize business processes, development and deployment of CRM systems, credit conveyors for banks and international financial institutions), the largest private Russian airline Transaero Ltd, and CapitalBE (consulting in oil and gas, law, finance, insurance, HR and other areas).

The Roerichs Pact, also known as the Treaty on the protection of artistic and scientific institutions and historic monuments, or the Washington Pact, is the first international treaty in history on protection of the cultural heritage that established the priority of protecting cultural values over military necessity. It was signed in Washington in 1935 at the initiative of the Russian artist Nicholas Roerich.
