Europa Nostra Awards

Professional activity of Ms Shaposhnikova, First vice-president of the International Centre of the Roerichs, Director General of the Museum by name of Nicholas Roerich was highly appreciated in Europe. She was named the winner of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage in the category «Dedicated Service».

Awards Ceremony which was organised in the framework of Europa Nostra Annual Congress for the eighth time took place in the Bizantine Saint Irene Church of the VI century. Russian laureate Ms Shaposhnikova was represented by Mr V. Manturov, Director National Center for Guardianship over the Heritage, who was authorised by the International Centre of the Roerichs to receive the award. Mr V. Manturov warmly thanked the jury for the appreciation of L. Shaposhnikova activity. The European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage is given for the greatest achievements in maintaining and preserving Europe's shared cultural heritage. The European Commission and Europa Nostra announced 29 winners from 15 countries for the 2010 Edition of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage. The winners were selected from nearly 140 submitted projects, stemming from 26 countries. The selection of Laureates was made by one of the 4 Heritage Awards Juries, composed of independent experts from across Europe.

The lifetime dedication of Ms Shaposhnikova has been warmly recognised by the Jury. She has shown that devotion, clear aims and professionalism will lead to success in spite of administrative barriers and adverse financial circumstances. Ms Shaposhnikova robustly contested conservative points of view and has won. The Jury also appreciates her preservation of the important Lopukhin's estate in Moscow from demolition and its transformation into a museum.

Europa Nostra, the pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage, is the representative platform of 250 heritage NGOs active in 45 countries across Europe. It is the voice of this vast movement of European civil society active in the field of heritage towards international bodies concerned, in particular the European Union Institutions, the Council of Europe and UNESCO.

At the first time the representative of Russia Mr V. Manturov, Director National Center for Guardianship over the Heritage, was included in the Board of the European Federation of Europa Nostra.

Europa Nostra and the International Centre of the Roerichs have the common purpose — to provide preservation and protection of cultural heritage and to make this work a significant direction of Public Policy.
