International Museum Festival “Intermuseum 2011”: new opportunities

The International Museum Festival «Intermuseum 2011» was held in Central House of Artists in Moscow 3 – 7 June 2011. This is the most important annual forum for all museums of Russia that has been held for 13 years. This year the motto of the festival was «The space of culture — the space of trust».

More than 1500 representatives of 130 Russian and international museums of different types, including museums of libraries, archives, charitable foundations, handicraft workshops, companies and educational institutions took part in the Festival. The International centre of the Roerichs also represented its exposition.

The orginizer of the Forum is the Ministry of Culture of Russia with the support of Russian Committee of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and the Museum's Union of Russia.

The representatives of regional departments of culture, educational institutions, ICOM of Russia and other institutions of culture also participated in the event.

The main aim of the Festival is to integrate into the sphere of humanitarian interaction among CIS countries, to enlarge contacts with international museum community, to create effective dialogue platform for experience exchange and modern museum technologies and management models approbation, to form conditions for young specialists’ joint work, to stimulate their work and maintain youth inter-museum projects.





Deputy Culture Minister Andrei Busygin addressed to the participants of the Festival with a greeting speech. He said that in this year the Festival became «more powerful and authoritative. He informed that this year the capital of Russia welcomed not only represantatives of CIS countries but also experts from the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy, South Korea, Germany, Switzerland and other countries.

The special guest of the Festival Alexander Sayn-Wittgenstain, Vice President of pan-European Federation for Cultural Heritage Europa Nostra addressed to the participants with a speech. He said that Europa Nostra organisation is open for cooperation with Russian cultural institutions. He emphasised that the International Centre of the Roerichs became a member of Europa Nostra in 2010 and Ms Lyudmila Shaposhnikova, Director General of the Museum by name of Nicholas Roerich became a winner of the Europian Union Prize for cultural Heritage for her great contribution into the preservation of cultural heritage.

The International centre of the Roerichs participated in this prestigious Forum. The activity of the Museum by name of Nicholas Roerich on popularization of art and culture of different countries was presented at a special showcase. This activity is in line with Nicholas Roerich's concept of cultural space without boundaries and national prejudices. Nicholas Roerich believed in great cooperation of the world nations under the Banner of Culture.




The exposition of the museum was accompanied wit a mediapresentation that reflected its multifaceted activity. Visitors had opportunity to see the best editions of the ICR dedicated to the Roerichs creative work and world outlook as well as with unique exhibits of Tibetan bronze and Mexican sculpture.

It is not the first time that the ICR participates in the Festival. According to Mrs Natalia Cherkashina, Deputy Director General of the Museum by name of Nis\cholas Roerich, events of the kind are very important for museum workers. «That is a wonderful place to exchange experience of experts from many countries and making new professional contacts. New knowledge and experience give us new opportunities for development of our cultural activity».
