the evening in memory of July M. Vorontsov

On December 12, 2011 the evening in memory of July M. Vorontsov, the outstanding Russian diplomat and former President of the International Centre of the Roerichs, was held in the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich. The event was organized by the Russian Diplomats Association in cooperation with the International Centre of the Roerichs.

The evening was opened by Madam Lyudmila V. Shaposhnikova, First Vice President of the ICR, Director General of the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich. She narrated that being the ICR President for seven years Mr J. Vorontsov was working hard for preservation of the heritage of the illustrious Roerichs family. Madam Shaposhnikova emphasized that only due to Mr J. Vorontsov persistance, authority and personal involvement it was possible to provide a special flight to deliver the Roerichs heritage from India to Moscow.

Mr Alexey N. Borodavkin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, told in details about Mr J. Vorontsov diplomatic mission during the hostilities in Afganistan, and his determining role in the preparation and signing of the important international Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles in 1987.

Mr Pogos S. Akopov, Chairman of the Board of the Russian Diplomats Association, emphasized Mr J. Vorontsov international authority as well as his great professionalism. At the end of his speech Mr Acopov read aloud the greeting address by Mr G.B. Karasin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia.

The speeches dedicated to Mr J. Vorontsov were also made by Mrs Marina N. Shirshova, assistant director of the UN Information Centre in Moscow; Mr Sergey A. Ordzhonikidze, member of Public Chamber of Russia, former Deputy UN Secretary General; Mr Sergey A. Filatov, President of Fund of Social- Economical and Intellectual Programs; Academician Eygeny P. Chelyshev, member of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences; Mr Victor M. Afanasyev, President of the International Ligue for Culture Protection, Pilot-Cosmonaut of the USSR, Hero of the USSR; Alexander V. Stetsenko, First Deputy Director General of the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich; Prof. Vladislav V. Shinkarenko, Vice President of the International Academy of Informatization.

Presentation of the book «From Molotov to Lavrov. July Vorontsov's unwritten memoirs» by Gagik Karapetyan and Vladimir Grachev-Selich was held during the event.

Prof. Vladislav V. Shinkarenko awarded Madam L.V. Shaposhnikova with the Order

On behalf of the International Academy of Informatization Prof. Vladislav V. Shinkarenko awarded Madam L.V. Shaposhnikova with the Order “For services in the development of the Information Society”. The International Academy of Informatization awards were also handled to Mr Boris. M. Bulochnik, the Museum Patron; Mr Sergey A. Anikin, Head of Publishing Department of the ICR, and Mr Alexander V. Stetsenko, Deputy Director General of the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich.

The photo exhibition “The Protector of Peace and Culture” dedicated to July Vorontsov was opened in the Museum halls on the Day of his memory.
