Days of Buddhist culture of Tibet in the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich: IV official Russian tour of representatives of Palden Drepung Tashi Gomang Monastery

Drepung Goman foundation invites everyone to participate in a comprehensive charitable program “Days of Buddhist culture of Tibet” in the Museum named after Nicholas Roerich. The program is dated to the official visit of Palden Drepung Tashi Gomang Monastery University delegation. The university is one of the major Buddhist centers for studying philosophy, medicine and astrology. It belongs to the Gelug tradition headed by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

The main action of the function is creation of a Sand Mandala. It is an ancient Tibetan art which became available for Europeans a little more than 10 years ago. For ages it was a part of secret tantra rituals. In our days this wonderful mystery gives us opportunity to touch the priceless experience of Buddhist tradition and to learn more about the original Tibetan culture.

During the procedure of the creation of Green Tara Sand Mandala a cultural program will be presented. It will allow the guests to learn more about Tibetan culture and life of Tibetan monks in one of the major monasteries - universities of modernity.

All members of the delegation graduated from Drepung Gomang Monastery University after 15 years of studies. Four of them have “Geshe” degree in Buddhist philosophy which corresponds to the European PhD. The delegation headed by Geshe Lharampa Jinpa includes the Head of ceremonies of the Monastery, Master of ritual singing and the best voice of Drepung Gomang Monastery.

Drepung Tashi Gomang Monastery is one of the seven faculties of the ancient monastery complex Palden Drepung which was founded in 1416. At the end of 1950s the monastery, ruined during the occupation of Tibet by China, was restored in the north-east part of India. Since 1969 Gomang monastery is located in Karnataka, India. It is famous for many great Lamas, scholars, philosophers and practitioners who reached the high spiritual realization. At the moment there are about 2000 monks in the monastery originated from Russia, Mongolia, Nepal, Bhutan, and some other regions in India.

Each day of the function will start with joint morning meditation accompanied by famous overtone singing by Tibetan Lamas. After that the monks will create the Sand Mandala with the presence of those who would like to see and meditate during creation of the Green Tara palace. Besides, visitors can listen to lectures on Buddhist philosophy.

After completion of Mandala it will be destructed. It is a separate ritual full of deep sacred and symbolic idea – there is nothing permanent in the world and we shouldn't be attached to anything.

In the framework of the function the passing of Lung (a permission to read the Mantra of Green Tara) will take place.

All earnings received during this charitable event will be transferred to Drepung Gomang monastery to support old monks and orphans who study in the monastery.

The function will be arranged with the participation of Maratika company ( which is one of the leading distributors of ethnic goods from Nepal and Tibet (
