Commemorative Volume Announcement

The Publication Department of the International Centre of the Roerichs is preparing for publication the two-volume set “Awaken the Beautiful in Yourself” (In Russian) dedicated to the 110th anniversary of Svetoslav Roerich.

The planned publication comprises the materials throwing light on the almost half-century long period of the public activities of Svetoslav Roerich (1948-1993) in India, Russia and Bulgaria. It includes articles by Svetoslav Roerich, his lectures, speeches and conversations, multiple interviews with the Indian, Soviet and Bulgarian mass media as well as reminiscences of scholars, culture figures, journalists, renowned politicians and diplomats about their meetings with Svetoslav Roerich and his spouse Devika Rani in Bangalore, in his estates Tataguni and Naggar, Delhi, Chennai, Moscow, Leningrad, Sofia, Suzdal etc.

The materials of the publication are arranged chronologically and fall into several parts: Articles by Svetoslav Roerich, Speeches, Lectures and Conversations of Svetoslav Roerich, Reminiscences about Svetoslav Roerich and Devika Rani Roerich. Volume I comprises the materials written and published in 1940-1970s, Volume II – those written and published in 1980-2000s.

Published for the first time are an essay written in co-authorship with George Roerich and dedicated to the memory of Helena Roerich (1956), an article on the pictorial technique of Nicholas Roerich (1958-1959) (both documents come from the collection of the Manuscript Department of the International Centre of the Roerichs), speeches of Svetoslav Roerich delivered in Bulgaria (1978, 1981) from the archive of the National Radio of Bulgaria, the speech of Svetoslav Roerich during his last visit to the USSR in the context of creation of the Soviet Fund of the Roerichs and the Centre-Museum named after Nicholas Roerich (November 1989) from the archives of the International Centre of the Roerichs, translations of the publications in the Indian and Bulgarian media on various dates, a complete set of transcripts of Svetoslav Roerich’s speeches in the USSR compiled by Mrs. K.A. Molchanova and little known audio-recordings of Svetoslav Roerich’s speeches.

All materials are supplied with extensive annotations revealing the circumstances of the life, creative work and activities of the Roerichs in various historical contexts.

The publication is illustrated with the photographs of Svetoslav and Devika Rani-Roerich taken in 1940-1990s and the reprints of Svetoslav Roerich’s paintings.

The International Centre of the Roerichs appeals to the public for financial support and announces a fund-raising campaign to make the publication possible.

Costs estimate: 750 000 rubles (Volume I – 350 000 rubles, Volume II – 400 000 rubles)
