Lectures on the Roerichs Delivered in Shimla University and College
On October 12–13, 2018, the students, research scholars and teaching staff of the Department of Visual Arts and other departments of Himachal Pradesh University and the Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV), Shimla got a wonderful opportunity to learn about the life and art of Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich. The lectures “Nicholas Roerich’s Himalayas as the Treasury of Spirit” and “The Light of India in the Art of Svetoslav Roerich” were delivered by Dr. Alexander Pereverzev, Asstt. Russian Curator, International Roerich Memorial Trust, Naggar (on deputation from the International Centre of the Roerichs, Moscow). The lectures were organized with the assistance of Dr. Bhader Singh, Asst. Professor in Painting, RKMV, Shimla.
Both lectures were well illustrated with the paintings by Nicholas and Svetoslav Roerich, and helped the audience to create a fair idea of the art and ideas of the two great Russian artists who made India their home and whose art was saturated with Indian spirit and imagery.
The vote of thanks was given by Dr. Navendu Sharma, Principal, RKMV, and Prof. Him Chatterjee, Head, Department of Visual Arts, Himachal Pradesh University, and a renowned artist who paints the Himalayas and counts Nicholas Roerich among the major sources of his inspiration. He thanked the speaker for the informative presentation and expressed hope for future cooperation between Himachal Pradesh University and the International Roerich Memorial Trust, Naggar.
