Celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Roerich Pact on the juridical faculty of the Saint-Petersburg University

Opening of the photo-exhibition «75 years of the Roerich Pact» from the archive of the International Centre of the Roerichs and round table discussion on «The Roerich Pact in retrospective of the problem on protection of cultural values» was held on the juridical faculty of the Saint-Petersburg University in commemoration of this Anniversary.

The organizers of the event: Saint-Petersburg State University (SPSU), the International Centre of the Roerichs (Moscow), Juridical faculty of Saint-Petersburg State University, Saint-Petersburg branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs, Museum-Estate of N. Roerich in Isvara (Leningrad area), Non-profit partnership «The World of Traditions» (Moscow), with the support of the State Duma Committee on Culture and Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation. The event was supported by General Consulates of USA, Belgium and India — the countries which historically linked with promotion and adoption of the Roerich Pact.

The event was attended by Prof. N.G. Skvortsov, rector of SPSU, Mr A.A. Tyagunov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture, Ms Sheila S. Gwaltney, Consul General of the United States of America in St. Petersburg, Ms Jehanne Roccas, Consul General of Belgium in St. Petersburg, Ms Radhika L. Lokesh, Consul General of the Republic of India in St. Petersburg, Mr Eduard Tomsha, Chairman of the Saint-Petersburg branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs. All guests were presented the book «The Banner of Peace» published by the ICR on the history of the Roerich Pact.

The exhibition includes photos, historical documents, posters, post stamps and other exhibits.

In the round table «The Roerich Pact in retrospective of the problem on protection of cultural values» held under the chairmanship of V.S. Ivanenko, Head of the Department of International Law of the SPSU, took part Mr V.V. Lukyanov, Vice Dean of the SPSU, Mr A.A. Tyagunov, Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Culture, Prof. V.V. Frolov, Deputy Director General of the Museum by name of Nicholas Roerich, Ms Sheila S. Gwaltney, Consul General of the United States of America in St. Petersburg, Ms Jehanne Roccas, Consul General of Belgium in St. Petersburg, Ms Radhika L. Lokesh, Consul General of the Republic of India in St. Petersburg, Mr P.V. Platonov, Commitee of State Control, Use and Protection of memorials of history and culture of St. Petersburg administration, Prof. M.S. Stiglits, co-chairman of the All-Russian Society for Protection of Monuments of History and Culture, Mr Eduard Tomsha, Chairman of the Saint-Petersburg branch of the International Centre of the Roerichs, Mrs O.A. Cherkasova, Director of Museum-Estate of N. Roerich in Isvara, and also post-graduated students of the Juridical Faculty of the SPSU.

The participants of the round table discussed the historical importance of the Roerich Pact, and the necessity of cooperation of state and public organizations for preservation and protection of cultural values.
